Oracle Fusion HCM OTBI - Chapter 9: OTBI Subject Areas – Deep Dive
π Content
What Are OTBI Subject Areas?
Subject areas in OTBI are predefined sets of logical groupings based on specific business domains such as HR, Payroll, Compensation, Absences, and Time. Each subject area is built from transactional tables but optimized for reporting.
𧩠Structure of a Subject Area
-
Each subject area contains folders, and each folder holds related columns.
-
Subject areas are created per module (e.g., Core HR, Talent, Absence).
-
You can only combine columns within a single subject area in one analysis.
π Key Subject Areas in Fusion HCM OTBI
Subject Area | Description |
---|---|
Workforce Management – Worker Assignment Real Time | Provides data on worker assignments, departments, jobs, grades |
Workforce Management – Worker History Event Real Time | View job/assignment change history |
Workforce Management – Person Real Time | Personal info such as name, gender, date of birth |
Absence Management – Absence Real Time | Absence entries, types, balances, status |
Compensation – Salary Details Real Time | Current and historical salary info |
Payroll – Payroll Balances Real Time | Detailed payroll values like earnings, deductions |
Talent Management – Goals Real Time | Goals defined by employees and managers |
Time and Labor – Time Entries Real Time | Submitted time card data |
Learning Management – Learning Records Real Time | Tracks employee learning activities |
π§ How to Choose the Right Subject Area
-
Start with your report objective.
-
If you need assignment/job details → use Worker Assignment Real Time
-
If you need personal info → use Person Real Time
-
If you're pulling absences → use Absence Real Time
-
Example: If you’re asked for a report on all employees who were hired after Jan 1, 2024, including their department and manager — you’d use:
Subject Area: Worker Assignment Real Time
Columns: Hire Date, Department, Line Manager, Full Name
❗ Limitations of Subject Areas
-
You cannot join two subject areas in a single OTBI analysis.
-
Some subject areas may lack certain attributes (e.g., National ID is not available in some).
-
Not all data is real-time for all modules; check Oracle’s documentation for refresh lags (mostly applies to Payroll and Financials).
π§ͺ Real-Time Scenario Example:
You want to create a report on employees with approved absences over the last 30 days.
Subject Area: Absence Management – Absence Real Time
Filters: Status = 'Approved', Absence Start Date >= Last 30 Days
Columns: Person Number, Full Name, Absence Type, Start/End Date
π‘ Best Practices:
-
Always test the subject area with a small query before building large reports.
-
Use “Subject Area Documentation” from Oracle Help for column definitions.
-
Don’t overload analyses with unrelated fields — stay focused on your reporting need.
